A tongue-in-cheek look at some of the world's unusual city names
Have you just gone by Accident or passed Hell on your way to somewhere? You might have seen Five Forks while looking for Burnt Corn. Did you turn to Eek when you drove through Beaver, Chicken and King Salmon?
Maybe Santa Claus actually lives in Paradise to easily go to Surprise although found Nothing but Love and Inspiration before asking Why there is Chloride and Mocassin on the way to Bitter Springs.
Laugh if you may, but these are actual names of cities. Accident is a city in Maryland while Hell is in Michigan. Five Forks and Burnt Corn are in Alabama. Alaska is the location of Eek, Beaver, Chicken and King Salmon. Arizona has cities named Santa Claus, Paradise, Surprise, Nothing, Love, Inspiration, Why, Chloride, Mocassin and Bitter Springs.
Some of the longest names
Since you are not a local, you'd really be awed by the length of these city names. In Southern New Zealand, you'll find a place with this formidable name: Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu.
If you think that is a tongue-twister, try this one from Wales: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
In Arkansas you'll find Hog Jaw, Monkey Bend, Morning Star and Marked Tree. In California you'll likely see city names such as Forks of Salmon, Fruitland, Peanut, Poopout Hill, Wimp and You Bet. If you go to Florida, there are cities there named Corkscrew, Early, Frostproof, Kissimmee and Two Egg. Alabama and Georgia both have a city named Ai.
Out in Illinois some cities are named Boos, Disco, Fruit, Normal, Oblong, Ogle, Time and Roachtown. Iowa has Manly and Scarville, Crab Town and What Cheer. Buttermilk, Ransom, Gross, Neutral and Protection are found in Kansas. Iowa has Ion while Kentucky has Krypton and Neon as well as Pig, Monkey's Eyebrow, Possum Trot, Trout and Spider.
Outside of the U.S.
Unusual city names are everywhere. In Alberta, Canada, a city is named Medicine Hat and there's Salmon Arm in British Columbia. Flin Flon is a city in Manitoba. Placentia, Conception Bay and Come By Chance are cities in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Ass is a city in Ukraine. Batman is located in Turkey. Bye is in JŠmtland, Sweden. In Hertforshire, United Kingdom is a city named Cold Christmas and Crackpot is a city located in North Yorkshire, England.
West Bengal in India has a city named Dum Dum and in the Cayman Islands as well as in Norway, they named a city Hell. Down Under, a city in New South Wales is called Howlong. In Bavaria, Germany, one of the cities is named Kissing. Middlefart in Fyn, Denmark is a famous spot and there really is a city called Lol in Dordogne, France.
Flintshire, Wales spells their city Mold, while Molde is the spelling of a city in M¿re og Romsdal, Norway. In Heaton, Bradford, England, a city has been named Six Days Only. And you wouldn't believe that in Upper Austria as well as in Lower Austria they would name a city Windpassing.
The world really is a fun place. Coming upon such unusual city names surely is refreshing, and there's more than what's listed here.
